The Sarasota Music Archive announces The Fourth
Annual Donald N. Morrison Young Composer Award for 2009
Cash Award $750.- plus
performance and live recording
of winning composition.
THE
DONALD N. MORRISON YOUNG COMPOSERS AWARD
will be awarded Sunday, May 11, 2009 at 2:30 PM in the Geldbart
Auditorium, at the Selby Public Library, Sarasota, Florida
Dr. Donald N. Morrison, late board member of the Sarasota Music Archive, was a retired professor of music at George Williams College. A noted composer, he wrote many piano pieces, chamber works and art songs. He also composed two musicals, an opera and an oratorio. His First Symphony was premiered by the Eastman Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Morrison was very much interested in working with young composers and inspiring them to compose.
The Donald N. Morrison Young Composers Award
Contest Rules:
1. Open to individuals who reside in or attend
school in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Lee
or Collier counties, Florida. Entrants must be 25 years or younger on
the postmarked date of the submission. The previous year's winner is
not eligible to apply.
2. Postmarked submissions date: No later than
February 15th, 2009
3. A completed application form must be included
with the submission.
4. Performance time must be between 3 and 9 minutes
in length.
5. Instrumentation may be for 1 to 3 different
instruments, limited to piano, voice, violin and cello. Computer or
electronic playback and prepared piano cannot be considered. No exceptions.
6. The work submitted may not have been performed
previously in public.
7. The judges may decline to name a winning composition.
Judges for the contest will be Dr. John Goodman,
Dr. Daniel Moe, Paul Wolfe
The 2009 award will be announced March 15th, 2009
